by Joe A Cowart Jr. 1972

James Coward was an English immigrant who settled in Rappahannock County, Virginia, before 1687. His son, William Coward, relocated to Bertie County, North Carolina, in 1722, leaving behind a widow and son upon his death in 1728. The lineage continued with Joseph Allen (Jr.) of Cocoa, Florida, who married Mary Evelyn Huett and had five children.

Confederate Soldier Raymond Stanley Cowart served in the 57th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. Jesse Leroy Cowart, another Confederate Soldier, returned to Georgia post-war, selling his farm in 1888 and moving to Laurens County. William Coward had seven children and owned land in various counties before his passing in 1780.

The Cowart - Coward genealogy traces back to Zachariah Cowart, a Revolutionary Soldier born in 1754 in North Carolina. He lived in various counties in Georgia and Tennessee, marrying Elizabeth DeLane and having several children. The family history highlights the migration and settlement patterns of the Cowart and Coward descendants across different states over the centuries.
