The Newbold line shares the first American ancestors. William Lawrence, who came to America in the ship Planter, with his brother John, in 1635 was fifteenth in descent from Robertus Laurentius, (or Robert Lawrence), of Ashton Hall, Lancashire. Dating back to 1191 Crusades. William Lawrence, who came to America was born in 1623 in St Albans, England. He was a cousin to the celebrated Sir Henry Lawrence, a man of high character and distinction, who was appointed by Cromwell, Lord President of his Council in 1654. William Lawrence married Elizabeth Smith in 1664, ( later Lady Carteret ). Their son Joseph was born in 1666.
