A Diary and Reminiscences Portraying the Life and Times of the author, William Van Duzer Lawrence. He recalls seeing his paternal grandfather on several occassions as a child, Captain Thomas Lawrence, at the time in Geneva, New York. He recalls his physical features and personality. As well, he recalls visiting his maternal grandfather, William Van Duzer, a well to do farmer in New York. He had come from Orange Cty, NY where the family had lived since old Dutch times. He recalls both his grandparents whom he felt he was better acqainted with than the Lawrence side. His father was Robert D. Lawrence, born on Staten Island in 1808. His mother was Kitty Van Duzer, the oldest child of William Van Duzer, born in 1809. When Kitty was 21 yrs old, in 1830, the family moved from Orange County to Chemung County by horseback with their furnishings on wagons hauled by oxen. They moved into a log house.
