Read about Lord William Douglas who married the heiress of the Hamilton family, was created Earl of Selkirk, Lord Daer and Shortcleuch in 1644 when he was only ten years of age. He was made Duke of Hamilton for life. His opposition to the most flagrant acts of tyranny was timid and feeble. Later he was appointed President of the Council and Lord High Admiral of Scotland and quarrelled with the Court. We are given the history and biographical sketches of continuing Lords and Dukes, the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh eighth and continuing to the twelfth, and their roles in the government and public life.
