SHEBOYGAN, WI: History of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, Past and Present, Illustrated

  • 15500

1912. 2 volumes. by Carl Zillier.

In 1836, the U.S. government acquired 4 million acres from the Menominee tribe, which included land along the Wisconsin River, and by 1848, the remaining lands were purchased for a reservation beyond the Mississippi. Early settlers in Sheboygan County experienced isolation, depending on Milwaukee for supplies, and by 1840, the area had minimal agriculture, lacking mills and schools. The financial crash of 1837 hindered growth, but by 1842, there was a notable increase in settlements, indicating a gradual recovery and development in the region.
