These are letters to and from John Jordan Crittenden, law papers, speeches, letters from prominent politicians and statesmen during his long career in public service. John Jordan Crittenden was born in 1787 in what is now Woodford County, Kentucky, which was Virginia at that time. He studied law and began to practice law in 1807. He became Attorney General of Illinois Territory. He became a member of the Kentucky State Legislature. In 1811 married Sally O. Lee. He was a U.S. Senator, was Attorney General of the U.S., was Governor of Kentucky in 1848, and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1861.  He died near Frankfort, Kentucky in 1863.
