John William Gardner, born on February 5, 1880, in Pine Valley, Utah, was the youngest of nine siblings and grew up involved in family farming and sawmill operations. He completed his education at Brigham Young College after serving a mission in New Zealand, where he became fluent in the Maori language and formed lasting friendships. Gardner pursued a career as a professor and later became a County Attorney, actively participating in church and community service until his tragic death in an electrical accident on October 7, 1920, leaving behind a wife and four children.
