Henry Biard, earliest known ancestor of the family, was of Scotch-Irish descent and it is said that he came to Virginia from Scotland. Here, he married a Nelson, sister of Thomas Nelson, Jr. who signed the Declaration of Independence, and with her he had thirteen children. Related family names are Baird, Beard, Bayard, Bard and Beiard.
