JONES: Genealogy of David Jones

  • 5500

By Mrs. Ellen M. Beale

This 1903 book on the genealogical history of emigrant David Jones was compiled by his great-great granddaughter. David Jones was born in 1709, the son of a clergyman of the Established Church in Merionetshire, in western Wales. His mother died, and upon his father's remarriage, David did not like his stepmother, and when he was twelve years old ran away from home and came to America. Relatives from his neighborhood had emigrated previously. He married Elizabeth Davies in Philadelphia in 1735. The young couple went to the Conestoga Valley, purchased land, and set up their home at the foot of the Welsh Mountain. They had six children. They were Episcopalean and interested in the Old Bangor Church, named for the Diocese in Wales from which many of the settlers had come. They built their church and homes around it, calling their village Churchtown. For over thirty years he was involved in the parish. The family descendants continued to be involved in the affairs of Berks County. The Jones name is Welsh and is derived from John. It was a common name in New England and Virginia's earliest days.
