The Jones name is Welsh and is derived from John. An 1899 book on the genealogical history of the Jones family of Roanoke, Virginia, with a brief sketch of the author's life. The Virginia clan Robert in the mid 17th century and Peter or Cadwallader Jones came to Virginia Colony in the company of Lord Culpepper in 1680 to take charge as governor.
