The Leavens family, early settler in America, the name, its origin and its track through New England to Northern Vermont. The ship William and Francis was making her passenger list in London in 1632, among them was arriving in Boston July 5, 1632 was John Leavens with his wife Elizabeth. He belonged to the humbler class of settlers. His wife died in 1638. The surname Leavens is believed to originate from the Old English name Leofwine, meaning "dear friend".
