Biographical sketches of the Huguenot Solomon Legaré and of his family, extending down to the fourth generation of his descendants. Also, Reminiscences of the revolutionary struggle with Great Britain, including incidents and scenes which occurred in Charleston, on John's Island, and in the surrounding country of South Carolina during the war. The persecuting authorities of France having broken their treaty with the Protestants compelled the Huguenots to either forsake their Bibles and recant their faith in the teachings of the Word of God or be tortured and murdered. After the revoking of the Edict of Nantes the Huguenots were forbidden to leave France, commanded to stay within the kingdom, that they would become exterminated; and all who were caught escaping were cruelly butchered in cold blood. At least five hundred thousnd escaped the massacre, finding asylum in other European countries and America.
