LINCOLN: Stephen Lincoln of Oakham, MA, his ancestors and descendants 1895

  • 2000

By John E. Morris

This 1895 book contains the ancestry of Stephen Lincoln of Oakham, MA., from the line of Thomas 'the miller', the first Lincoln immigrant to America. Thomas was born in England about 1603 and came to New England in 1635, settling in Hingham, Mass. Before 1650 he moved with his family to Taunton and established a grist mill. He was the son of Ichabod and Hannah (Codding) Lincoln. In the 2nd Part of the book we see a doorway pictured, The fine old Colonial doorway being hidden by the dense growth of shrubbery that surrounds the house, a separate picture of it is given. He erected a tannery nearly opposite his dwelling, and conducted that business in connection with his farming operations. Tradition relates that in the chimney of this building he concealed his money, placed in an old shoe, during the time the British General Burgoyne's army was barracked at Rutland, nearby, in the days of the Revolutionary war. Stephen Lincoln was a member of the Oakham Congregational church, and was chosen chorister June 17, 1779. He held the office of highway surveyor in 1781, 1792, and 1798. He was warden in 1784, and selectman in 1791 and 1798. He is remembered as a man of imposing appearance, large and tall, while his wife was small of stature.
