The first settlers [of Scituate] were generally men of property. Many of them were scholars and accomplished gentlemen. They impressed on their children a love of learning and a refinement of manners that has never wholly disappeared, in the darkest periods of the annals of ' Home.' With this company we have Lawrence Litchfield.
