From the Preface, the author's father, Samuel Elias Mays, assembled the foundation data for this genealogy.

In 1606, the Virginia Company was organized in England in order to establish a colony in America.

Robert Mayes, aged 23, came to Virginia in The Assurance In July, 1635. We also see Cornelius, aged twelve, who came in 1635. Edward Mays, in 1637, Henry Mays in 1650 to Northumberland Co., and more of the name who were among the earliest settlers in Virginia.

Reverend William Mease (b.1574) immigrated from England to Kecoughton near Jamestown, Virginia in 1635. He had two sons, John and Henry who were well known. Henry served in the House of Burgesses. Their family held large land grants. Descendants primarily spelling the surname Mays or Mayes, lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky and elsewhere.
