John Mercer, a Utah Pioneer of 1848. John was the son of Thomas and Margaret Embly, farmers. His birthdate is September 7, 1818, at Bashel Eves, Mitton Parish, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. He was baptized Oct. 4, 1818. He lived just east of the city of Preston, well known in the early days of the LDS Church (Mormon). LDS missionaries came from America and many people converted, John included. John married Nancy Wilson as they emigrated to America. He was in a position of leadership in the church, and In 1855 Brother John Mercer was ordained a high priest and counselor to the bishop. From notes and journals, much is revealed of the daily life from baptisms, builings, dealing with hostility from Indians and discussion on plurality of wives.
