Why the 48th Mass?

Not a well known unit like the 20th Massachusetts whose men were decimated charging up Fredericksburg or the 54th Massachusetts that tried to storm Battery Wagner. The 48th was only a nine month regiment that served in Nathaniel P. Banks' XIX Corps and fought in the Port Hudson Campaign. It's history is unique and they were held beyond their term of service and threatened with Dry Tortugas if they did not help capture Port Hudson.
