In this short volume we have a brief history of the Gates family with a focus on the ancestry and descendants of William Gates of Frankfort, New York; Appendix I, descendants of Alfred Gates, brother to William Gates, of Franklin LA; Appendix II, Ancestry of Mary Ann Deuel, the wife of William Gates. The American family begins with Stephen Gates, the second son of Thomas of Norwich, England, who migrated to America in 1638 along with his wife, Anne (Hill) and their two children. They were on the good ship 'Diligent'.
