  • 6000

By Mary Stanley Field Liddell

In this book detailed family lineage is provided, tracing the ancestry of the Hon. George Gray 4th of Philadelphia, his ancestors and descendants. The name was common in Barbadoes as several Grays seem to have been deported there from England on account of their religious faith, Quakers being strictly proscribed and persecuted at that time. Some were voluntary immigrants. An early governor of the Islands was a Gray. It was the second generation listed we see coming to Philadelphia from Barbadoes in 1691/92, bringing with him a certificate of removal from the Friends' Monthly Meeting in Speighstown. This letter highlighted, also showcasing the family's historical roots and connections.

In seeing the life of George Gray 4th (1725-1800), in spite of his business success, his last days may have been sad as his beloved wife Martha had died at the age of 47, in 1781. All his sons but one had preceaded him in death and his oldest son, George Gray 5th, died on January 12th, 1800, just a few days before him as he passed on January 23rd, 1800.

Notes onwar records, an old family bible, marriage certificates, illustrations offer a glimpse into the varied lives of members of the family.
