By William T. Groves
A history and genealogy of the Groves Family in America, showing the descendants of Nicholas La Groves of Beverly, Massachusetts. He was born about 1645 in France, a Huguenot refugee, and emigrated from the Isle of Jersey to Salem, Mass before 1668. He was one of the citizens who signed a petition against imposts to the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. He married Hannah Sallows in 1671. He was a seaman involved in Colonial trade, and likely did not spend much time at his home town. His family became members of Beverly First Church, his wife Hannah being one of the first members. In the 2nd generation the old french 'La' passed and the name became Groves.
