HATFIELD: Descendants of Matthias Hatfield 1954
By Abraham Hatfield
From the Introduction; The surname Hatfield has been borne by several apparently unrelated pioneers who came to America in Colonial days. The best known and most widely distributed of the name descended from Thomas Hatfied who was a soldier in New York City in 1665 (The Hatfields of West Chester) and Matthias who took the Oath of Fidelity in New Haven CT in 1660 and became one of the patentees of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. The family had more than the average number of loyal adherents to the Crown during the Revolution, many of whom afterwards settled in Nova Scotia and other parts of eastern Canada.
