HEAD FAMILY 1963
By John Harris Watts
The name Head, anciently written Hede or Hide, is probably taken from the place written Hede in the Doomsday Book 1066. This place now Hithe, in Kent, England is where the earliest traces of the family are found. This book is a compilation of resources showing branches of the family in America. Early records in America show immigrants with the name Head came to Virginia Colony from England. And Nicholas Head, a crew member of Captain John Smith visited New Castle Island (NH) in 1614 or 1615, but did not stay. William Head, a victim of Indian massacre on March 22, 1622, at Powle Brooke, Virginia is the earliest settler on record. James Head in 1636, Thomas in 1638 and more early settlers. Henry Head, a planter, was born in 1695. He married Frances Spence. Attention is also given to William Head of Maryland, showing this line of descent.
