HUFFMASTER - HOFFMEISTER Family records 1922

  • 1600

By James T. Huffmaster

Huffmaster - Hoffmeister family tradition indicates that name came about as their ancestor held the position of Hofmeister, which in English is Courtmaster, under Charlamagne (786-814 A.D.) and that title became the surname. Gottlieb Hoffmeister was born in the vicinity of Frankfort, Germany 1757 and came to America about 1776 and settled in Shenandoah Cty, Virginia. He married Sarah Louderback and their children were born in VA. They all moved to Tennessee where he bought land in 1810. In the third generation we find Joseph and Elizabeth, married in 1808. He was in the war of 1812 under General Andrew Jackson, in a campaign against the Creek Indians. Six generations of descendants are presented.
