The following pages are designed to include the early history of the Hughes family and an account of the allied families including Gass, Ward and Boze.  The book reads as biographical, and includes Powell Hughes and his descendants, Lucy Lea Hughes, Elizabeth Walker Hughes, Little Berry Hughes, and more with their descendants. The Hughes family is of great antiquity and prominence. As we see many members of the name holding offices of importance, such as James Hughes, of Penna, a member of Washington's body guard in 1773. Joseph Hewes was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. George Robert Hughes a name associated with the Boston Tea Party in 1773, and service to his country.
