From the Foreword This booklet is intended as a supplement to Georgia Descendants of Nathaniel Pope of Virginia, John Humphries of South Carolina, and Allen Gay of North Carolina," published by the same author in 1934. This ancient name is found in various forms including Humphrey, Humphreys, Humphries, Homfrey, Humfrey, Humfries, and more. Anglo-Saxon in origin, derived from ham, meaning home and frea, meaning lord or protector. The meaning being 'defender of home'. Another version in french would be vrai - true - meaning 'true man'. In the sixteenth century seven Humphreys suffered martyrdom. The clan in Virginia is said to be of that descent.
