By Bertha Bortle Beal Aldridge

This book provides a detailed record of the history and genealogy of Lapham family in America. The name Lapham means hearth stone.  Three Laphams were early settlers in New England.  First was Thomas who came from Kent, England and settled in Scituate prior to 1635. Second was John, a weaver from Devonshire, England, and settled in Rhode Island. His house was burned by indians during King Philip's War, and he later moved to Dartmouth, Mass. This book records both of their descendants. ( The third was John Lapham, who married Hollis, in 1671 in Malden. No more info is on him. ) John Lapham  was born in 1635 in Devonshire, England. He was a Quaker, a member of the Society of Friends. He married Mary Mann. He was one of four Representatives in the General Assembly in Providence, RI. Later in Dartmouth he helped build the first Friends Meeting House. John and Mary had six children. He died in 1710.
