The History of a Great English House [seat of the Montagues, with some genealogy]. This 1884 book provides an extensive look into the lineage of the Montagues, whose estate was famously engulfed by a devastating fire in September 1793. This tragic event coincided with the drowning of the 8th Viscount Montague in Germany, solidifying local folklore around the mythic "Curse of Cowdray," which predicted the family's ruin by both fire and water. Roundell’s book is notable for preserving the legacy of the great Tudor mansion, which hosted prominent royals like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The original publication was heavily illustrated with British Museum drawings and sketches by architect Anthony Salvin.
