This book details generations of descendants, delves into the historical background, and biographical sketches of the Montague family. The primary branches covered include Peter Montague (c. 1603–1659) who settled in Lancaster County, Virginia, establishing a sprawling Southern lineage with branches reaching into Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois. He was the older brother to Richard Montague (c. 1614–1681) who settled in Massachusetts. They were sons of Peter and Eleanor.

Early history has recorded the name of at least one of the family, Drogo De Montagu, born about the year 1040, who became the trusted friend, companion, follower of Robert Earl of Moriton, brother to William, Duke of Normandy. Drogo and the earl were of the same age and heartily joined in the plans of William's proposed expedition against England. This expedition occurred in the summer of 1066.
