This biographical memoir is a tribute to Richard Hurd, (b. 1719 d. 1808), Lord Bishop of Worcester. His parents were John and Hannah Hurd, plain people, farmers. He showcased exceptional academic prowess and a deep interest in literature and philosophy. Despite opportunities in academia, he chose a different path but later returned to college to a warm reception. His letters exhibit gratitude, admiration for scholarly pursuits, and a witty, humorous style. Through his correspondence, he reflects on friendship, morality, and societal issues with intellect and sharp wit.
