by Mary Matteson Wilbur
Memories recalled of family life and growing up, an account of family members, letters, some early history, genealogical charts, and related families...this is the life of Mary Hulburt Matteson - with Lineages of Mary Hulburt and Horace Matteson. Halsey Hulbert, father, was born in 1806 in Enfield, Hartford County, CT. Mother was Betsy Moses.
The memories my Mother wrote of her early life are too precious to be confined within the original notebook in her own handwriting. So, in order that her other children and their children and grand-children may share them I am having them printed. They were written with a particular audience in our three little children, living at the time in Japan, in order that they might know what the life of their grand-mother as a pioneer child, was 'we realized what the children missed by separation and persistently urged her to write her memories, but it was not until Mr. Wilbur, on a trip to the United States in 1912, put a notebook in her hand and gained her promise, that she began upon them. Her sweet, strong spirit breathes through the written pages.
He was the son of Obadiah Hulbert, whose father, grandfather and great-grandfather were also named Obadiah. Mother to Halsey was Rachel (Burr). They both died when Halsey was very young.
