Pennsylvania - A History is an extensive chronological history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It covers from the time prior to European settlement up to the time period of printing. Nearly every aspect of Pennsylvania's history is given some coverage. Originally published under the direction of George P. Donehoo in 1926 as a four-volume set. Each volume features a variety of illustrations, photographs and maps connected to the material discussed.


Pennsylvania - A History, Volume I

Volume I contains the first 546 pages of the series, presenting the history of Pennsylvania before the in the Colonial period. It begins with coverage of the land's original inhabitants, then the progressive settlement of various European groups, such as the Swedes, Dutch and English. It covers the actions of the early Colonial Governors as well as conflict between settlers and indians, and early disputes with other colonies. It also begins a more in-depth explanation of the settlement of eastner Pennsylvania, beginning in the greater Philadelphia region and spreading west and north.


Pennsylvania - A History, Volume II

Volume II contains pages 547 to 1060 of the series. It begins with an in-depth presentation of the progressive settlement of western Pennsylvania, particularly the greater Pittsburgh and Erie regions. It also covers various events across Pennsylvania leading up to the Revolutionary War.


Pennsylvania - A History, Volume III

Volume III contains pages 1061 to 1566 of the series. It continues the coverage of pre-Revolutionary events from 1770 onward on into the Declaration of Independence and Revolutionary War. It proceeds into the history of Post-Revolutionary government in Pennsylvania, including the administrations of Governors up to Martin Brumbaugh in 1915. Major events of that period are also covered, including Pennsylvania's involvement in the Civil War, particularly the battle of Gettysburg.


Pennsylvania - A History, Volume IV

Volume IV contains pages 1567 to 2043 of the series. This volume relates Pennsylvania's history from the state's involvement in World War I to the time of printing [1926], and covers the administrations of Governors Sproul and Pinchot. Following the historical information, the focus turns to descriptive aspects of Pennsylvania's history: education, religious development, the Judicial system, the medical profession, geology, forests, natural resources, population centers, transportation, etc. This volume also contains the index for the four-volume set.
