STOUT: Some Allied Families of Kent County, Delaware with the Story of Penelope Stout (Softcover)

  • 2000

by Thomas Hale Streets. 1915. 107p

Sarah Cowgill, a member of the Friends group, lived peacefully with her husband until his passing. Following his death, she continued to be an active member of the community and passed away in January 1853 after being a public friend for approximately 50 years. Benjamin Stout and Margaret Hamm were a couple who had children named Susanna, Sarah, Thomas, and James. William Cowgill, who married Hannah Pleasanton, had children, including Charles Cowgill, contributing to the family lineage.

Charles Stout, in turn, passed down land to his sons Charles and Benjamin, establishing a generational connection to the property. The legend surrounding Sarah Stout being saved by an old Indian serves as a testament to the harmony between the Dutch settlers and the indigenous people in East Jersey. This story reflects a time when cooperation and understanding prevailed between the two groups until conflicts arose due to the misconduct of the colonists, leading to tensions with the native population.
